To Educate Young People

RESOLUTION 1-08 Report R1.2.1 (CW, 16–19); Overtures 1-10, 15, 17–19, 23 (CW, 282, 285–87, 289)

WHEREAS, The LORD commands us to teach our children the Word of God diligently (Deuteronomy 6); and

WHEREAS, the Large Catechism states, “… if we wish to have excellent and able persons both for civil and Church leadership, we must spare no diligence, time, or cost in teaching and educating our children, so that they may serve God and the world” (LC I 172–73); and

WHEREAS, Christian parents are to raise their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord so that their children may live as faithful, responsible, and God-fearing citizens in the world; and

WHEREAS, Lutheran schools in urban, suburban, and rural contexts, as extensions of Lutheran congregations, promote this God-pleasing end; and

WHEREAS, The Synod has more than 1,700 schools ( LCMS.org/school-ministry, accessed May 30, 2026) with curricula informed by the Word of God and the Lutheran Confessions (see lutheranschools.org), served by thousands of educators who go above and beyond in nurturing students academically, emotionally, and spiritually, even amidst cultural shifts and economic strains; therefore be it

Resolved, That the Synod affirm the God-given vocation of parents as the primary educators of their children; and be it further

Resolved, That the Synod thank God for Lutheran schools and homeschools, and for those who learn and work in them, and encourage them as they use doctrinally-sound curricula and books; and be it further

Resolved, That the Office of National Mission (ONM) work with districts to foster networking for congregations, schools, and workers, especially in urban and rural contexts, to maintain robust ministry presence; and be it finally

Resolved, That the ONM work with districts to identify and provide resources to plant new congregations and schools in areas that are underserved.

The Chief Financial Officer and LCMS Accounting and Financial Services staff, in consultation with the Finance Committee, anticipate no incremental costs as this activity is covered in the current budget and scope of the Office of National Mission (estimate required by Bylaw 3.1.7 [g]).
