These definitions are site-authored reading aids. Use the Handbook's own definitions where they are directly provided.

Advisory delegate

A convention participant category to verify in the representation and convention sections.

Voting delegate

A delegate with voting representation as governed by constitutional and bylaw provisions.

Overture

A formal request or proposal submitted into convention process.

Resolution

A convention action item presented for consideration and possible adoption.

Floor committee

A convention committee that studies assigned material and presents resolutions or recommendations.

Bylaw

A detailed rule under the Constitution that orders Synodical procedure and responsibilities.

Constitution

The foundational governing document for the Synod's confession, membership, meetings, officers, districts, and amendments.

Article of Incorporation

A corporate governing article for the Synod as a legal corporation.

Ecclesiastical supervision

Oversight in matters of doctrine, practice, and official duties; verify exact scope in the Handbook.

Doctrinal review

The Handbook process category for review of certain materials for doctrinal faithfulness.

Dissent

The Handbook category for formal dissent from doctrinal resolutions or positions.

Dispute resolution

The Handbook process for certain disputes, reconciliation steps, panels, and appeals.

Commission

A Synodical body with assigned responsibilities; verify each commission's authority in Bylaw 3.9.

Board

A governance body with defined authority and accountability in the Handbook.

Agency

A technical Handbook term; check Bylaw 1.2 before using it formally.

Synodwide corporate entity

A defined corporate entity category in the Handbook.

District

A Synodical district governed by constitutional and bylaw provisions.

Circuit

A local grouping structure governed by Bylaw 5.

Circuit forum

A circuit gathering category with convention-related significance in Bylaw 5.3.

Convention

A regular or special meeting of the Synod or district as governed by the Constitution and Bylaws.

Nomination

A process for proposing candidates for elected offices or boards.

Election

The convention or related process by which candidates are chosen under Handbook rules.

Amendment

A formal change to the Constitution, Bylaws, or Articles under the required process.

Majority vote

A voting threshold that must be verified in the specific Handbook context.

Two-thirds vote

A higher voting threshold that must be verified in the specific Handbook context.

Shall

A mandatory term in legal and governance writing.

May

A permissive term in legal and governance writing.
